Buying a Mobility Aid for a Parent: What to Look For (and Avoid)

Buying a mobility aid for a parent is part product decision, part conversation. Get both right and they’ll actually use it. Here’s how.

Start with the conversation, not the cart

Many older adults resist a mobility aid because it feels like losing independence. Reframe it: the aid is what keeps them independent, out with friends, at the grocery store, walking the dog. Involve them in the choice (color, style, features) so it’s theirs, not something imposed.

Match the aid to the real need

Be honest about where they actually struggle:

Our best mobility aids for seniors guide walks through each in plain terms.

Get the fit details right

These are the details people skip and regret:

  • Weight capacity with margin, never buy right at the limit.
  • Height adjustment that matches them: a rollator grip or cane should reach the wrist crease with a slight elbow bend.
  • Seat width (for chairs), measure hip to hip and add an inch or two.
  • Frame width that fits their hallways and bathroom door.
  • Weight of the aid itself if you’ll be loading it into a car, lighter aluminum is far easier.

Avoid these common mistakes

Don’t buy the cheapest thing sight unseen, comfort and stability vary a lot. Don’t over-support (a wheelchair when a rollator would keep them walking). And don’t forget brakes that lock firmly, a rollator seat is only safe if the park brake holds.

Make it easy to live with

Look for an aid that folds for the car, has a bag or basket for their things, and rolls over the surfaces they actually use. The Drive Fly-Lite transport chair and Medline Empower rollator are easy starting points for caregivers.

Not sure where to start? Take the 60-second quiz with their situation in mind, and we’ll point you to a specific pick.

This is general information, not medical advice. A physical therapist can assess your parent’s balance and strength and recommend the safest aid and fit.
